Even in the smallest of yards or no yard at all, a container of freshly planted flowers or greenery can be added with little time or an expensive investment. The best thing about plants in containers is that they can be placed in a location that is suitable for you and the plants. A small front entry way or a balcony in an apartment can surely use a little color most times. Containers can be matched to the décor of the living space and the plants can accent the colors of the residence.

Make sure the container you choose will be manageable for you to move from area to area. If the container is large and deep, consider filling only the top half with planting soil. Use a smaller pot turned upside down to fill in the lower half of a large container. A good potting soil mix can then be added to the container. Make sure it has good drainage. If the container will be placed where you don’t want water to spill from the bottom, you will need to place a saucer under it to catch any overflow. Large containers can easily be moved by placing it on decorative wheeled dolly.

Next, choose plants that have similar watering needs to group together in your container. You local nursery center or county extension office can recommend plants that compliment each other. If you are pressed for time or just don’t want to invest that much effort, you can always buy planting kits that come with the pot, soil, and flower seeds that are  already imbedded into a precut mat that is placed on the soil for planting. All you do is add water.

These small added touches will make a more inviting feel to your home for you and also when friends and family come to visit. I’ve heard that a well landscaped property has a better chance of attracting buyers. I have to agree. But whether you are planning to sell or not, you home should be a peaceful, restful retreat for you and guests.

Just one pot of flowers by your entry or you patio can make a big difference in the feel of your living space. After all, plants are living!
