Indoor Veggie Gardens

July 3, 2010

There are several vegetables that can be grown indoors. Sure, they can be grown outside, but with the correct containers, along with ideal growing conditions, you could as well include an indoor vegetable garden. The benefits of possessing an indoor veggie garden goes beyond the beautification of your home, or the relaxation you get from gardening, but you can grow fresh vegetables without going outside.

Carrots, tomatoes, and radishes are the simplest vegetable to grow indoors. Each grows differently. Each will require separate containers but with a little research this is not a big deal. A south-facing window is the best source of required, natural sunlight for your vegetables to grow in. If you do not have the correct exposure, you can invest in an artificial light bulb to provide necessary light.

As with any container you chose use, make sure there is adequate drainage. Do a search for ‘indoor gardening containers’ to get the most cost effective items. If your plants lie in too much water they will die. If the pots do not have openings in the base, consider layering gravel or wood chips in the bottom to allow the water to drain. So, be sure the water does not drain too quickly as well.

After deciding on the types of vegetables to plant, follow similar guidelines as you would for outside. On the seed packets it could offer suggestions on what time to plant, the amount of light and water that is required and the spacing requirements. Water the plants in accordance to the condition of the soil, making sure it doesn’t get too dry or stay too wet.

By the finish of the summer season, you should be able to gather the vegetables full-grown within your own home.
